July 2017 Due to work and family commitments this year’s trip to Ethiopia was later than previous years and hit the rainy season in May. A season that lived up to its name! This our 13th year supporting the poor in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, we were joined by a friend of Angela’s, Karen who has been a fantastic supporter of the project over many years. This also allowed us an extra bag to add to the five 23 kilo bags we were already taking. Being met at the airport by Sister Terfatu and Sister Wenatu is always a delight and the journey back to their house our home for a couple of weeks is a catch up on the news of everyone we know as well as getting into the swing of using our limited Amharic (main Ethiopian language). Stop Shouting!People are always full of praise for the work we do in Ethiopia but throughout the years Sister Terfatu has been the backbone and has become a very dear friend. Every day she goes about her duties with a smile supporting the poor and the sick and never complains about her own ill health. Her grasp of languages is amazing speaking a couple of Ethiopian dialects as well as English. However sometimes it does get lost in translation. One morning when her alarm had failed to go off she told us at breakfast that her alarm clock has stopped ‘shouting’ at her. When asked about the fund raising for the electricity project Sister said ‘that those who have donated have given light to those in the dark, they are the light of the world’ Sister Terfatu along with the support from friends and families enables us to give the much-needed support to the many poor in Ethiopia and year on year see how lives are changing. We continue to pride ourselves that every penny donated gets to the people in Ethiopia. Ethiopiahope has no overheads and no administration fees. Closing Thought‘I envision a world where everyone can lead healthy and productive lives, regardless of who they are or where they live’ DR Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu. First Ethiopian elected as Director General of the World Health Organisation. Elected May 2017 Many thanks for your continuing support.
