It’s All in A Name Our first ten years in Ethiopia was always greeted with Farengi which means foreigner. In the later years and due to the influx of Chinese construction we were greeted with China, China. This year we were greeted with shouts of Corona, Corona! With some running away and covering their faces. COVID_19 At the start of our second week there was one case of Corona Virus in Addis Ababa. It was all over the national and local news channel and the main talk on the streets and villages. The story being that a Farengi had brought the virus into Ethiopia. We did meet with some fear as we walked around Bahir Dar and because of this we did limit our contact and hence our work on the project. During our second week all the schools and Day Care Centres were instructed to close by the Government, this appeared to increase the fear in the people and completely stopped our project. We mentioned earlier that food prices had increased from our previous visit, with the onset of the Corona outbreak it appeared to be an excuse to push up the prices even more. Luckily, we had already purchased the grain etc for the feeding programmes. And Finally This year we found the going very tough and feel that we need to re-evaluate the project. Our funding did not meet the needs of the people and many wanted money for basic foods which is not something we have every wanted to do as it does not resolve a situation but is a very strong need. We felt at times we were playing God in deciding who gets what. We suspected that some were asking for money for certain things but were going to buy food as when we asked for receipts the situation would turn. Over the next few weeks on our return to the UK we will look at the best way forward, with the children’s education in school and the Day Care Centre being paramount. Once again, a huge thank you for all the support you have given Ethiopiahope over the last 16 years, your support has changed and will continue to change the lives for many people and future generations. Ethiopiahope has never had any overheads and every penny collected supports the people in Bahir Dar.
